Imported Rugs

Althoygh Europe have a very long history of rugs weaving and some western countries did produce flat weaves and carpets more than a thousand years before the pile carpets were introduced still Europians had imported rugs from Persia and far east at first.
There is a great number of different facts showing that Oriental carpets were first time imported in Europe after 1000 AD.

So the technique of weaving could at least be known at that time. But the quality of rug being made Europe was still low, so the Europian had imported rugs from Asia.
These imported rugs were produced with the single knot process(the same technic was used in Spanish carpets).

By 13 century craft of rug carpet weaving was brought into England. Slowly, the wealthier British started to use pile imported rugs in their homes.
It is believed by a great number of people that Venice had imported rugs from Asia during the 15th century.

This fact shows the devotion of Europeans to Oriental rugs(altough they were making rugs of their own). And by end of the 17th century Europeans were still appreciated Persian rugs more then any other.
Rugs weaving became a usual craft in Europe in the middle of the 19th century. By that time almost all countries of Europe had their own kind of rug and technology of making it. And in spite of that imported rugs were still very desireable in all Europe.
Present days most known kind of imported rugs is handmade rugs. They are unique and therefore rare.
